Sewing with velvet

Suson’s jacket is made from velvet, and sewing with velvet is quite tricky.

For one, you can’t iron it because ironing it will crush the pile. There are special velvet ironing boards that look like metal rugs: the pile of the velvet slides down into the pile of the metal and you can iron the back without crushing it.

For another, velvet is very bulky and can make the wearer look fat, even if, like Julia, they have the PVF™

And finally, dear readers, when you sew a velvet jacket which is flat lined with another fabric, you may wonder “How the heck do I sew darts in this jacket and catch both layers of fabric?”

The answer is “By stitching the outline of the dart through both layers of fabric, thus holding them together, and then pinning the dart and stitching it”

Step 1: Stitch around the outline of the dart through both layers of fabric

Step 2: Pin dart, and sew dart just outside the outline.

Step 3: Cut open dart and press

It's very calm over here, why not leave a comment?
