Felicity the Sewing cat, hard at work

Felicity the sewing cat thedreamstress.com

I’ve been making not one, but two 1900s corsets at the moment, both of which have been in  progress for well over a year, and have both been plagued with EVERY POSSIBLE THING THAT COULD GO WRONG.

Felicity must sense how much they have been stressing me, because she’s been practically glued to the sewing table throughout the process.  Not only that, but she’s insisted on being as close to the sewing machine as possible.  If she could sleep on the sewing machine’s table, she would!

She’s ended up hidden under the moving sewing on a number of occasions (and has also kept the sewing from moving when she got out from under and sat on it), so I finally got a video of it:

I’m testing out the latest addition to my sewing machine flock: a Janome MyExcel

A little bonus: you get to hear the elusive Mr D speak!

Other bonus: even though I was there, and I know that isn’t what was happening, I’m convinced I’m hurling pins on the floor throughout this video.

Next post: the corsets sewing process, and a bit of a review of the TV 1900s corset pattern

  1. Oh my goodness, this may be one of the cutest things ever. Guido isn’t interested on being on the table (thankfully!) and he definitely wouldn’t tolerate having things laid over him all the time. Felicity is such a good kitty! (Although the flippy tail tip makes me think that she only tolerates it for so long lol)

Thank you for that charming vignette of Felicity and her talents!

What a helpful kitty! The sound of the sewing machine does resemble purring, of course…of a really big cat. Perhaps that big purr, along with the proximity to you and the cozy-kitty nest produced by said sewing machine (and you) help explain why Felicity enjoys “helping” so much.

  4. I love that irritated look she shoots you when the corset starts moving across her, as though she suspects you of hinting that her profuse fluffiness could use a little lacing in…
Happily our cats take no interest in my sewing. Would that I could say the same for my knitting!

Watching this makes me wonder how on earth animals make sense of the things humans do.

There’s nothing in nature that could prepare a cat for this.

  6. Amazing video <3 One of mine also likes to help with sewing, but generally by sitting on the fabric or pattern pile.

My cat will sometimes lay at my feet under the sewing table…..but she loves to stand on top of any fabric laid out and cry. Not only am I altering her world but it’s distracting me from the most important thing, her. When I do my hand sewing I have to hold it up enough so that she can lounge on my lap. She does like her humans trained. Thanks that vid is precious.

Awww, isn’t she the cutest sewing cat possible? <3
Apart from my own two cats, of course, but they don't help me when sewing, they just like to lie on the fabric when I'm cutting things out, and chase pattern pieces.

Thanks. Felicity is such a sweetie! My three furry creatures would never tolerate the sound of the machine, let alone having fabric on top of them. One is far too timid, and the other two need to actively “help”.

my last cat was trained not to walk across the fabric layout when i was cutting out on the floor. I am not quite sure how i managed that!

I’m fairly certain that is the most adorable sewing companion ever.
