A very ‘Gay Red Shirt’

Definition of  GAY (via  Merriam-Webster) 1 a  :  happily excited,  merry  <in a  gay  mood> b  :  keenly alive and exuberant  :  having or inducing high spirits  <a bird’s  gay  spring song> 2 a  :  bright,  lively  <gay  sunny meadows> b  :  brilliant in color Having embarked on knitwear, I’m having lots of fun making simple knit tops and mastering my knit techniques. I’d already earmarked this awesome red fabric with widely spaced navy blue & white stripes for a simple boat-necked T when  NZ’s Prime Minister stuck his foot in his mouth  and told someone they’d never make it because they were wearing ‘a gay red shirt’.  Wow.  Thanks John Key. Whatever your feelings on homosexuality, using personal descriptors as insults is  NOT OK. Everyone, up to and including Sir Ian McKellan, has come down on Mr Key for his comment.  He tried to defend himself by saying he heard his kids say it, and thought it meant ‘weird’.  I don’t think he’s helping his case at all. The Seven Year Stitch apron

Mr Dreamy & I will be celebrating our 7th anniversary in just a few days.  I can’t believe it’s been that long! We got married in Hawaii, just down the road from my parent’s farm.  I was a very practical bride: we didn’t want our wedding to be a fantasy or a fairytale, we wanted it to be the best reflection of what we could really be as people. Now, any practical bride who is going to scrub floors on her wedding day needs a good apron, and I had a stunner: an embroidered early …

Windy Lindy 2012

It’s that time of year again – Windy Lindy, the biggest swing event in Wellington’s dance calendar. Every year I solicit your opinion on costume, and then happily ignore what you tell me and make whatever I feel like (I don’t mean to do this, it just happens !).  And then I deluge you with pictures. Over the years I’ve worn natty nauticals, glamorous ’30s evening gear, and been a human chicken and a pin-up Dorothy Gale. This year’s theme was Blitz Ball, and while I love 40s fashions, I just couldn’t get excited about the theme.  I tried my best, settling on Simplicity 3446 – the 1940 pattern that my Grandmother used for her wedding dress (the pattern still had her alterations!) I paired it with a fantastic vintage brocade in vivid fuchsia which I picked up in Napier at Art Deco weekend last year. Isn’t that a fascinating fabric?  It’s got a secondary weave layer floating over the base layer.  Not a good thing for Felicity to get her claws into, and kind …
