The ‘Subversive Hawaiianism’ pyjama pants

Dear Readers, this post is going to take a little prep on your part.  Open another tab and put on  this song.  If it finishes and you are still reading and haven’t started crying from the sheer beauty of it,  this one  is nice.  So is  this one. Right, theme music in place, let’s talk about this post. The theme on Sew Weekly this week is ‘vacation’ (I know, how very American!) and I found it very tricky.  It’s the middle of winter in NZ right now, and it’s cold, and horrible, and dark, and I have chilblains (really: you can see how red and swollen my pinkie is in the picture above).  My body is not suited to living in a cold, dark, climate, and neither is my temperament.  As you may know, I’m a child of warm weather: of sunny skies, white sand beaches and tropical fruit.  A child of the loveliest place in the world.  I’m from Hawai’i, and this time of year I miss it so much it hurts. So when …

The ‘Henrietta Maria’ dress

This week’s challenge on the Sew Weekly commemorated the Royal Jubilee celebration.  The brief said, make something inspired by “any member of the royal family, past or present” and I immediately thought “Past!!!!”.  I mean, this is me we are talking about. So I started brainstorming an idea and working on my project. Then, with the garment done but for the hem, the Sew Weekly inspiration board came out.  Mena’s inspiration board is all from QEII’s life.  I guess by “past” she meant royals who were alive during Elizabeth’s early life.  My “past” is a little more “past” than that.  By  three centuries.  Oops. So.  Umm…  Anyway… This was my inspiration: Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, may be a  long  time in the past, and only barely related to Queen Elizabeth, but she  was  a member of the royal family, she’s someone who fascinates me, and I  love  the fashions of the 17th century. Oh boy do I  love  the period from 1630-1660.  It’s so pretty.  The full skirts.  The sloped shoulders.  The slightly …

The ‘Little Bit of Magic’ cape

Just in case you haven’t noticed,  I  love  capes.  However, I do not love Vegas.  It’s hot, it’s commercial, it’s all about alcohol and gambling and stuff I don’t do.  But this week’s theme on the Sew Weekly was “Viva Las Vegas”.  And Vegas is pretty much the promised land of capes.  Elvis, Liberace, Evil Knievel, magicians — in Vegas, it’s  all  about the cape.  So I may not be a Vegas girl, but I can totally be a cape girl. Really though, as awesome as an Elvis or Liberace-style embroidered and bedazzled to the gills cape would be, I don’t think my life and wardrobe can support  that  much awesome. So I went for a toned down version in classic black and white — something to evoke the traditional magician’s cape, with just a little hint of Vegas bling in a shiny, plush velvet, and a patterned jacquard satin lining. I’m super excited about the lining actually.  The fabric was my Grandmother’s, so it’s wonderful to finally get to use it, 15+ years after …
