The Home Front at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea

Photos!  Pretty, pretty photos from my talk at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea! And lots of them!  (well, of course.  This is me we’re talking about!) And then, down at the bottom, some unexpectedly serious musing.  (well, of course.  This is me we’re talking about!) The talk covered the immediate before-the-war fashions, and the effect of WWI on fashions during and after the war. Usually I use my own models, but this time MWCS arranged all the models – a group of gorgeous girls (and by gorgeous I mean ‘interesting and lovely people’ not ‘look like a magazine model’) from a local college (that’s a high school in the US) or WelTec (a college in the American sense) and museum staff and friends for the men.  I  missed my usual models because they are so fabulous, but really enjoyed getting to work with a new group, because they were also fabulous. The Home Front at the Museum of Wellington City & Sea

Every third Thursday of the month the Museum of Wellington City & Sea has an awesome events programme, with music, speaker, and other interesting things. Come along next Thursday, the 16th, for their WWI ‘Home Front’ evening, and hear me talk about the changing shape of fashions before, during, and after the war.  It’s an absolutely fascinating period in costume history – and I’ll be debuting some new, never been seen reproductions from my costume wardrobe (ooooh!) Plus there will be period music, hair and makeup demonstrations, and spot prizes for the best dressed (yes!  That means you can wear your own costume!)   I’ll be speaking at 5:45.

Art Deco 2015: Swinging* times in Sunny Napier

*And by swinging, I mean swing dancing, of course! Another Napier Art Deco Weekend has come and gone, and another fabulous time was had by all – or at least everyone I talked to! I almost didn’t go this year, because, while I had a great time last year, it was so ungodly hot  that I felt ill most of the weekend, and my memories of last year are also mixed up with how stressful it was (we took possession of our new house the day I left for Napier, and moved in three days after I got back!).  But the lovely ladies at the clothing swap convinced me to go, and I am so grateful for it! I think this was the best Art Deco Weekend yet, and it was the best because I didn’t stress about trying to be anywhere, or do anything – I just let the good times happen when, and where they did, and they DID. In previous years I’ve pushed myself to be at the costume contest to document …
