The Lost Scroop Fantail Historical Photoshoot

You may remember that I had an epic computer crash in January – one that took not just my hard-drive, but some of my backup drive (and, thanks to the  great-Christmas-lack-of-internet-of 2016, I didn’t  back up to the cloud) One of the things that was lost was my original photoshoot with the Scroop Fantail skirt, taken with the fabulous Theresa (one of the brilliant minds behind The Plus Ones). I have only four photos from the day – all poor quality out-takes that were uploaded on to FB before the crash.  But I thought you might like to see them, just for the fun of it! It was a very windy day (as you can probably tell by the hat-clutching) and after the photoshoot, while still in outfit, we went down to the CBD and got Tommy Millions pizza, and, because it’s Wellington and people are too cool for that, not too many weird looks! Look what’s all over the wrapping paper behind me?  Fantails!

A 1900s touch of blue corset

If you’re a longtime reader of my blog, you’ll remember Theresa: she’s a former Wellingtonian, and every time she comes back for a visit, we dress up and do a photoshoot together. We’ve done ca. 1880 (one and two), 17th & 18thc yellow (one, two and three), hoopskirts (one, two, and three), and Regency (one, two & hair), but Theresa has been asking for a 1900s photoshoot for ages. To do 1900s properly, first I had to finish the two S-bend  corsets I’ve been working on for well over a year. This is the second TV1901 corset that I’ve started, but they were both finished at the same time.  The first one got abandoned for a long, long time  due to frustration when I realised how much the sizing was off.  I’ll be covering that in more detail when I blog about my original attempt, but basically, the sizing doesn’t work in smaller waist/bust measures unless you also have a very small ribcage as well.  This particular corset is 3 sizes larger than Theresa’s recommended …

Regency hair

Remember the Regency photoshoot Theresa and I did back in January?  There were so many pretty photos from it that I didn’t manage to show you even half of the good ones, and I was afraid the blog would get rather monotonous if it was just post after post of these photos! One thing I did really want to show you was our hair, as I think both our hairstyles turned out rather beautifully.  I usually go for earlier Regency, quite deshabille, with lots of loose tendrils, with my hair, but Theresa has a secret talent: she’s a master braider. Actually, it’s not at all a secret talent, because Theresa is so awesome at braiding that she has a braiding business and  runs incredibly popular workshops on it  in Melbourne. With a braider par excellence at my disposal, of course I had to go for super braided hair.  I’m not a period hair expert at all, so we just stuck to LOTS of plain braids, all wrapped around each other and a bun. I have …
