Stupid, but kinda awesome

110 years ago someone did something stupid but kinda awesome. Annie Edson Taylor climbed into a barrel and rolled it into the river above the Niagara falls, becoming the first person to survive the plunge. To her credit, Annie didn’t risk death for thrills, glory, or some other silly reason.  Nope, Annie had struggled to financially after the death of her husband in the Civil War, and hoped that she could leverage her fame from the stunt into a reasonable income, and avoid the poorhouse. Wait, what was that?  The Civil War you said?  Didn’t that end almost 40 years before Annie’s stunt?!? Yep, the intrepid Annie was 63 when she risked life and limb in a wood and iron barrel lined with a mattress. Pretty awesome! Annie had already shown that she had quite a bit of gumption by the time she attempted to break history on the falls:  she worked as a teacher, set up a dance studio, and travelled as far as Mexico in search of work. While brave, Annie’s stunt wasn’t …

Rate the Dress: Elizabeth Taylor does Civil War in Raintree County

Last week the usually popular 1910’s wasn’t quite so popular.  The collar was compared to an ectoplasm, and the whole thing was deemed disjointed.  Despite this, it rated a not-totally-abysmal 5.2 out of 10, mostly because a few of you redesigned the dress in your mind and then rated the redesign!  That’s cheating!  At least give me a rating before the redesign to work from! This week I wanted to show you something that would knock your socks off: something of utter gorgeousness that you would all be compelled to rate 10 out of 10.  Unfortunately, despite the fact that I come across completely covet-worthy frocks all the time, finding one on demand is difficult. So I’m showing you something I have had in my ‘rate the dress’ folder for months. This is Elizabeth Taylor as a spoiled southern belle in 1957’s  Raintree County.  Turns out Vivien Leigh didn’t have a total monopoly on playing those.  In the film she gets to wear a completely over-the-top, pink-and-white, 1950s-does-late-1850s frock, complete with matching parasol and massive …

Favourites of me from the photoshoot

These are my favourite photos of me from my photoshoot with Theresa. She got some wonderful images, and it’s great to see the Japonism dress in action.   In other news, we’ve had crap, cold, grey, wet windy weather since this photoshoot, and I have too much to do and am feeling a bit flat (unlike my bias silk crepe seams, which is part of the problem). So sorry if my posts aren’t as perky as usual.
