The tea gown: draping the bodice

With my design worked out and my fabric sorted, it was time to drape a pattern for my tea gown. First though, I had to figure out how it was going to go together and fasten. So here is my basic design (on the right): After confusing you all by asking how you thought the one on the left got put on (that’s easy – under the flap on the PL front) when I meant the right, and getting every possible suggestion on how it might go together, (my favourite being “drink the bottle labelled ‘drink me’, shrink to size, climb into the dress, and then eat the cookie labelled ‘eat me’ and grown until you fit it again”) I decided on what I thought was the most likely historically-accurate option. My tea gown will have a basic bodice support which will fasten up the centre front with hooks.  The lace overbodice will be sew into the gown on one side, and will wrap over the bodice support and fasten on the other side with …

Rate the dress about which I know nothing

There were some rather divided opinions about last week’s black and white-ish dress.  Some thought perfection, others though the dress and corselet didn’t match, and others thought it looked like the evil queen dressed up as Snow White.  All came together for a not-quite-fairytale total of 7.5 out of 10 One of my sewing students found this image and showed it to me:   I’m intrigued.  It looks so familiar, but I can’t quite place it.  The skirt is reminiscent of a Charles James, particularly the four leaf clover dress, but I’m not sure about the whole thing as a Charles James. So today I want to know two things.  One, do you recognise this dress or know anything about it?  And two, what do you think of it?  Perfect combination of business and pleasure?  Too many ideas at once? Rate the Dress on a Scale of 1 to 10   UPDATE: Huge round of applause for Daniel who identified the dress as Lachasse’s 1955 ‘Coat Dress’, now in the collection of the Manchester City …

The fireworks & flowers Armistice blouse

Remember back in January when I made the Folkwear #210 Armistice Blouse for Maggie? When I was done making it for myself I thought “Hmmm…that was quick and easy and cute, and I have extra of the floral voile I used for the front panel. I should make one for me”. So I cut one out, and got started on it, and then my schedule got overwhelmed with other sewing.  The mostly-done blouse languished on my UFO pile for six months, while I waited for an excuse to finish it.  Then the Sew Weekly ‘Red, White & Blue’ July 4th themed challenge came up, and I thought “Perfect!”.  The little blue pattern on the voile is probably supposed to be flowers, but it has always reminded me of fireworks. I didn’t end up finishing the blouse for the ‘Red, White & Blue’ challenge.  Instead I finished a waaaaaaay older UFO, and dolled up the blouse front with elaborate insertion work for the ‘Embellishement’ challenge. Sadly, I don’t love the blouse.  It’s just too fussy and …
