Things I sew – historical and modern

Pet-en-l’aire and petticoat

Having finally finished my 1780s pet-en-l’aire I was eager to do a photoshoot in it, but I delayed it for a few days so that I could do one more quick project: make a 1780s walking length muslin petticoat to go with it.    I’m so pleased that I took the time to complete the ensemble! The pet ruffles (particularly the little twists at the front ends) are just delighting me, and the petticoat is much better with the outfit than the old long one I’d paired it with before. For the photoshoot Madame O and I got dressed up in our respective yellow pet-en-l’aires and headed out to a park for end-of-day photos.  It’s been a very dry summer in New Zealand, and the whole country is in varying stages of drought, so the photos are ochre when they would usually be green.  It didn’t look much like our usual vision of pretend 18th century Europe, so we just pretended we were in Provence. Unfortunately we didn’t see a single other person at the …

Napier’s Art Deco Weekend ’13

It’s that time of year again: Napier’s annual Art Deco Weekend was last weekend, and I went, and I had lots of fun and took 642 photos and edited them down to 469 keepers and then edited those down to 26 I want to show you today, and a few more I’ll show you for specific costume posts. It was interesting to go back to Art Deco Weekend a second time: to review my first impressions, and get another look.  It was even more interesting to go back and read my write-up of last year’s weekend, and my impression of the event. I can’t say my overall view has changed much, but this year was inevitably a bit different.  I described it to Rachel (my weekend partner) as both better and worse than last year – as a returnee, I didn’t get lost walking around, knew where to park and where the good restaurants were, and when all the events were.  But this year also had less highlights: the op-shopping wasn’t as good, I missed …

The 1770’s linen paniers – done!

Yay!  The Panier-Along is done! (or at least all the instructions are up, feel free to keep making them and leave a comment on the page with a link to your finished paniers). My paniers are done too.  I won’t have time to do a proper photoshoot with them over a chemise and with stays for a few weeks yet – too busy teaching classes, running off on road trips with friends to the South Island and Art Deco weekend and doing my own sewing to get dressed up. So here is a quick holder photoshoot with my super-historically-accurate tank top and denim skirt, just to show that they do work: The Challenge:  Under It All (undergarments) Fabric:  Brick-red linen ($2 at an op shop some years ago) Pattern:  self-drafted, based on the pattern in Corsets and Crinolines and other historical examples Year:  1760-1780 Notions:  Cane hooping ($6), heavy twill tape (less than 20 cents at an op shop), twill tape ($1), linen thread (inherited from Nana) How historically accurate is it?  Very – all …
