The HSF ’14: Challenge #10: Art

The 10th Historical Sew Fortnightly Challenge of 2014, due Sunday the 1st of June, is Art.  Art is simple: make something inspired by a work of art. With the Historical Sew Fortnightly Challenges I generally just post the theme, some inspiration, and hope that people will figure the rest out on their own, and if they want to be a bit creative with interpreting the theme, that’s fine, as long as they can explain why their item fits.  But I’ve received a lot of questions about art, and what does and doesn’t qualify, so I’ll elucidate a bit more. Your artistic inspiration can be a painting: Or a sculpture: Or a sketch: Or an etching:   Or a fresco: But not  fashion plates (because they are commerce, rather than art) or photographs (because early photographs were not considered art within their time, unless you can prove that the photograph you are working off of was considered art within its own time), or advertising (because, again, commerce). In addition, your inspiration garment can be a historical …

The ca. 1860 Paisley Petticoat

Remember this petticoat? I’ve posted it as inspiration for pretty much every HSF challenge it would qualify for: Under it All, White, Eastern Influence, Embellishment… Clearly I’m madly in love with it, and I’ve always wanted to recreate it, but the dream seemed impossible.  I simply don’t have the time to do the amazing handiwork, and what were the chances of finding a similar fabric? Naturally, I had to have it.  But it wasn’t exactly cheap… I restrained myself for two days, and then had to go back to TFS for a necessity, and I saw that half the bolt was already gone.  So I bit the bullet and forked out (brace yourself when you see the price below) and bought four metres of it – which may have been slightly overkill. I didn’t regret it, because I was in the shop again a week later and it was all gone. I’ve been desperate to make it up ever since I …

The ‘Bambi & Bows’ 1929 dress

Whew!  A day late, but my dress for the HSF ‘Pink’ challenge is done! Things got held up by a nasty attack of hayfever, which turned into a nasty cold.  And at the same time I’ve got a massive, top-secret, super-exciting project to work on: the biggest project I’ve ever had.  And it’s amazing.  And due on the 28th.  And in the meantime I’ve got a trip away to Napier’s Art Deco weekend, and a trip away to Auckland on the weekend of the 2nd of March. So for a while not much happened with the fabric except Felicity lying on it: But this weekend I hauled myself out of bed, and, with the help of a box of tissues, I alternated an hour on The Project and an hour on my dress, and got it done late on Sunday. As you can tell, the fabric is indeed pink, and features darling fawns with bows around their necks scattered  across it.  The English-language edition of ‘Bambi, A Life in the Woods‘ was published in 1928 …
