Five for Friday: Tips for doing the Historical Sew Fortnightly

I loved doing the Sew Weekly last year because it really made me look at my sewing: my stash, how I sew, what I sew, what I spend the most time on, and what I waste the most time on.  At the end of the year, I’m sewing much more efficiently, both in how long I take, and in creating things that I’ll really use and that work with what I have.  That was part of the reason for suggesting the Historical Sew Fortnightly this year: I want to turn all that I learned towards my true sewing love. Here are five tips based on what I learned last year that may help you tackle the Historical Sew Fortnightly. Plan ahead I’m announcing the Challenges 8 challenges ahead so that you have plenty of time to figure out what you are making for each challenge, where you are going to spend your time, and what you need for each challenge.   Make a list of the challenges and note what you are going to make. …

Five for Friday: Television shows that I love (that may surprise you)

Last week I shared five TV shows that people often assume I will love, but where I really don’t.  This week, here are 5 TV shows that I love, some of which may really surprise you (and the rest totally won’t, but there are only 5 TV shows I really wanted to talk about).  They are arranged in order of how unexpected my love of them is. 1. Hunting Aotearoa Yes, really.  It’s a reality TV show about hunting, and I love it.  And it isn’t even in English (well, it slides in and out of English & Te Reo Maori all the time), and Mr D loves it (Mr D hates foreign language films).  We sit there every week, tuned to Maori TV, watching people shoot animals and carry carcasses around, and we coo about how sweet it is. Because it is sweet.  It’s not really about the shooting, and it certainly isn’t about being macho and killing things.  It’s about local communities, and families, and really down-to-earth, ordinary people who are supplementing their …

Five for Friday: Television shows people think I must love (that I actually loathe)

Whenever people here that I am a textile and fashion historian they assume I must love certain TV shows.  And when people who know me hear about a new historical TV series they think I’m going to be super excited.  And I don’t.  And I’m not.  It takes a lot more than costumes and a bit of dressed up history to make me like a TV show. So here are the top 5 TV shows that everyone assumes I love (but I don’t).  They are arranged according to how much I dislike them compared to how often people assume I will love them. 1. Downton Abbey. I know.  Shocker.  Downton Abbey is #1 on my list of shows that I don’t love (even though everyone expects me to).  Why don’t I love Downton Abbey?  It has too many characters I wouldn’t want to know in real life.  None of the storylines ever have any resolution.  The characters (especially in the first season) are poorly developed and one-dimensional.  The history is well…not historical.  Downton Abbey has …
