Fawkes the Phoenix: a Hogwarts Halloween Costume

Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you had a wonderful holiday, with lots of the best parts of Halloween: creativity, community, an awesome Halloween Costume, a little bit of candy, and tons of fun. I’ve never grown out of my love of Halloween, but it’s only recently become a ‘thing’ in New Zealand, Usually there aren’t many cool events to go to – especially as an adult. This year Zara of Off-grid Chic alerted me to a Haunted Hogwarts party. Exciting! We decided to be the weird fully-grown women who went along without any kids, in full Halloween costume. Super last minute Halloween costumes! We’re both incredibly busy! I went closet-diving, and found: the dress I made as my end-of-semester project my first year in Uni; a silk blouse with scalloped edges by NZ designer Blak; my red sequinned Dorothy shoes; and a mask, originally made as a tui by the Comtesse de Chambourd, and re-made by me as a Labyrinth Firey when the paint started flaking off, and bunch of wrist, ankle & neck pieces …

I LOVE Halloween. How could I not? It’s a holiday all about dressing up! I love going all out with Halloween costumes, but I equally love taking ‘everyday’ clothes and sewing patterns and turning them into a costume. There is something really fun and clever about turning a simple thing into something wacky and fabulous with a bit of creativity (remember my circular cardigan Jedi?) In celebration of this concept, we’ve been brainstorming all sorts of fun costumes you could make from Scroop Patterns. The Miramar Dress, Top & Tunic We had to restrain ourself with ideas of costumes that could be made with the Miramar as a base. There are SO many. Make it floor length in black, add a hat and a broom, and you’re a witch! Or, a dangling girdle belt, and you’re a medieval maiden. Many stretch velvets have the right amount of stretch for the Miramar too. Dark red stretch velvet? You’re Mother Gothel! Pale turquoise with a chiffon cape? Elsa! Dark blue? Arwen! But you don’t have to go …

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Halloween, of course! If you are still in search of inspiration, here are five fabulous and ridiculous historical costumes that really wouldn’t be that hard to make. #5 Candy Girl: To make: 1) Take any outfit. 2) Staple candy all over it. 3) Be most popular person at the party! #4 Wild Men There is a long tradition of wild men costumes, and they are really easy to make: just glue grass and leaves all over a onsie. Historical, awesome, and scary. Just try not to light yourself on fire, OK? A more modern (and less flammable) would be to go as a head of cabbage: just stick cabbage leaves to yourself: #3 The Scrap Album: Scrap Albums were fashionable throughout the later 19th century, and were just albums filled with cutouts of pretty images – they were so popular they could could buy specifically made pre-cut out images in thousands of themes.
